Sunday 10 March – 1-5 Year Quadrangular
North Harbour’s one-to-five year representatives tried hard but were always battling when the final quadrangular inter-centre tournament was held at Auckland’s Carlton-Cornwall club at the weekend.
On greens much faster than what most of the players were used to both men’s and women’s teams found their Auckland counterparts too strong.
In its opening round the Harbour’s women’s team struck an in-form Auckland and was immediately put under pressure losing 6-0.
In the second round there was a 3-all draw with Northland but in the third a 2-4 loss to Waikato meant the team finished a distant third on the ladder behind Auckland and Waikato.
The men did a little better starting with a clean sweep against Northland but a 6-0 loss to Auckland and a 4-2 loss to Waikato followed.
While well behind the first placed Auckland Harbour managed to pip Waikato for second on the ladder, both teams having 10 points but Harbour having the better differential. Men’s team manager Ian McKenzie praised his players for fighting hard, pointing out that three of the games were lost by two points or less. He singled out three of the new players, Brendon McPhail (Orewa), Zakk Johnson (Birkenhead) and Lloyd Sinton (Browns Bay) for having emerged with merit and for gaining considerable benefit from the experience.
