Lisa Dickson achieved a notable milestone when the centre’s champion of champions pairs titles were decided at the weekend.
With her Takapuna partner Lauren Mills she won the women’s title to secure her 20th in the North Harbour centre, giving her a third bar to her gold star.

And in the men’s event the vastly experienced Grant Goodwin, the current centre representative selector, moved with his Riverhead partner Gordon Smith to within one title of a North Harbour gold star.

Should Goodwin achieve this distinction he would join that elite band of bowlers who have won gold stars in both the Harbour and Auckland centres. Before he moved to Harbour Goodwin, of course, had a distinguished playing record with Auckland clubs and has two bars to his gold star in that centre.

In Sunday’s finals at the Hobsonville club Dickson and Mills beat the host club’s Hanaan Shahwan and Carol Voshaar 20-6, while Goodwin and Smith beat Takapuna’s Jerry Belcher and Ian Hardy, 23-8.

But it was a fine effort by all of the combinations just to make the finals, especially Shahwan, who is just out of juniors, and  Voshaar, who is still in the one-to-five ranks and won the centre championship in that category a few weeks ago.
In the semi-finals they beat Orewa’s remarkable octogenarian Elizabeth Ring and Valarie Taylor 20-12, while Dickson and Mills beat Mairangi Bay’s Gaye Horne and Joy Watkinson 17-9.
The toughest test for Dickson and Mills, indeed, came in their opening match when they just beat Mahurangi East’s Pauline Hill and Noeline Holdsworth 17-16.

In the men’s semi-finals Goodwin and Smith beat Browns Bay’s Neil Fisher and Lloyd Sinton 16-13 and Belcher and Hardy beat Birkenhead’s Mike Haggart and Adam Richardson 20-12.

Also staged on what for some was a busy weekend were the centre’s one-to-five year mens champion of champion singles events.
Hobsonville’s Clinton Smith was successful, beating Manly’s Andy Dorrance 21-14 in the final.

The champ of champ women’s singles semi- final and final between Helensville’s Jeni Hart, Belmont Park’s Maxe Janssen, Mahurangi East’s Judy  Fisher and Browns Bay’s Jo Wyatt will be played at Manly next weekend.
