Report – BNH 1-5 Year Singles Champion of Champion – by Lindsay Knight
Hobsonville’s Hanaan Shahwan and Browns Bay’s Craig Lane were deserved winners of the two Bowls North Harbour one-to-five year champion of champion singles titles which were decided at the weekend. Congratulations to Hanaan on back to back wins in this competition.
Though there was a small field in the women’s event Hanaan left no doubts over her worthiness for the title, because in the semi-final and final she accounted for two formidable opponents, both of whom were coming from some excellent performances.
In the semi-final she beat Helensville’s Sharon Parker 21-15 and then in the final she beat Takapuna’s Skye Renes, winner of the centre open singles championship, even if it was by the closest of margins, 21-20.
Lane was especially impressive in winning the men’s title.
In the semi-finals he beat Takapuna’s John Whiteford, who in his highly competitive club has won a stack of junior titles as well as some in the open ranks, 21-3. He then beat Warkworth’s Mike Burke 21-11 in the final.
