Bowls North Harbour 1-5 Interclub Report by Lindsay Knight
Manly deservedly won the North Harbour one-to-five year singles in style yesterday with wins in post-section play against strong opposition, especially against Orewa and Hobsonville in the semi-finals and then final.
It was the second consecutive success for Manly in this event as last season it won the final against Takapuna.
Manly beat Orewa and Hobsonville 2-1 after having a comfortable 3-0 win in the quarter-finals over Birkenhead.
In the final against Hobsonville Andy Dorrance won the singles 21-15against Darren Morrow and Kathy Stevens and Alan Light won the pairs 11-5 from Hobsonville’s Stu Parker and Ross Noble.
Hobsonville’s only win was in the triples when a Clinton Smith skipped triple of E Frederickson and R Hooper prevailed over Manly’s Sandy Wilson, Colin Love and Helen Briant 14-7.
It was an excellent effort, though, by Hobsonville to make the final as in the semi-final it had to come from the brink of defeat against Takapuna. With a 21-13 win over Morrow in the singles by Shaun Goldsbury, an impressive first year player, Takapuna seemed poised to win but for late slumps in both the pairs and triples.
Hobsonville, which went through qualifying unbeaten, beat a combined Helensville-Waimauku team in the quarter-finals 3-0. Takapuna beat Browns Bay 3-0 and Orewa beat Mairangi Bay 2-1 in the other quarters.
