Milford 5000 – Lindsay Knight sums up the weekend

The well performed Birkenhead trio of Gary Wallace (skip) and the Nathan brother and sister pair of Chad and Millie Nathan ensured some glory for the North Harbour centre by winning the Milford club’s 5000 tournament at the weekend.

 In a tournament where teams from the Auckland centre dominated the main event Wallace and the Nathans ended as the winners, edging out in a tense contest a Pont Chevalier threesome skipped by Aaron White by just one point.

 Third was another Point Chevalier side skipped by Alex Reed.

  Teams from Howick, Balmoral and St Heliers rounded out the top six.

   That so many Auckland teams abounded was another indication of just how successful the Milford club’s flagship tournament has become as not only were there many entries from across the bridge but teams from as far away as Tauranga.

   The event is open to one-to-eight year bowlers with the condition that at least one player must be under five years. Because of its popularity Milford was able to fill both of its greens.

  For their win Wallace and the Nathans, who have both inherited their bowling touch from their accomplished dad, Peter, pocketed the first prize of $1500 as well as collecting the handsome cup donated by the event’s founders more than a decade ago, Tim Preston and Graham Dorreen,

  Harbour clubs were to the fore in the plate event with Manly’ Kevin Rainsford Kaylene McNab and Huia Eru taking the first prize of $360.
