Weekend Results – 4 & 5 May 2024
For North Harbour’s two representatives in major national and regional play-offs at the weekend it was a case of almost but not quite.
Both Helensville, at the Mercedes Cup one-to-five inter-club competition in Whangarei, and Birkenhead, at the national 3-5 championship in Wellington, performed with distinction but just missing out on the major prizes.
Helensville, defending the title it won last season, finished second just two shots away from the winning team, Northland’s Kensington. It was a good effort, however, to finish ahead of those clubs representing respectively, the Counties-Manukau, Auckland and Far North centres.
Birkenhead made the quarter-finals of the 3-5 competition but was pipped two sets to nil by Waikato’s Pirongia. But it was a little closer than that, Millie and Chad Nathan and Mark Rumble losing the first set on the last end and the second by just one shot.
Nelson won the title, beating Canterbury’s Bowls Papanui in the final.
In North Harbour events at the weekend the semi-finalists were found after the first two rounds in the centre’s men’s and women’s one-to-five-year champion of champion singles.
The semi-finals and finals for each gender will be held at Hobsonville next weekend.
In the men’s Orewa’s Wayne Harris and Manly’s Andy Dorrance will meet in one semi and Staun Popham, from Warkworth, and Clinton, from Hobsonville, will meet in the other.
In the women’s Helensville’s Jeni Hart and Belmont Park’s Maxe Janssen will meet in one of the semis and in the other it will be Judy Fisher (Mahurangi East) against Jo Wyatt (Browns Bay).
